Safeguarding Policy

Last updated: [Month Year]

My commitment

The safety and wellbeing of every young person I work with is my first priority. This policy sets out how I fulfil my safeguarding responsibilities when working with clients aged 12–17.

Parental consent

For clients under 16, written consent from a parent or guardian is required before sessions begin. For clients aged 16–17, consent from the young person themselves is accepted, though I encourage parental awareness where appropriate and safe to do so.

Confidentiality and its limits

Everything discussed in sessions is treated with complete confidentiality. However, there are situations where I have a legal and ethical duty to act, even without the client's consent. These include where there is a risk of serious harm to the client or to another person, where abuse or neglect is disclosed or suspected, and where required by a court of law. Where possible, I will discuss any need to break confidentiality with the client first. I will always try to handle these situations with care, honesty, and as much involvement from the young person as is safe.

If I have a concern

If I have a safeguarding concern about a client, I will follow the local safeguarding procedures for [Essex / Southend-on-Sea] and, where appropriate, make a referral to children's social care or contact the relevant authorities.

Designated Safeguarding Lead

As a sole practitioner, I act as my own Designated Safeguarding Lead. I hold [relevant safeguarding training — please confirm level, e.g. Level 2 Safeguarding Children] and keep this training up to date.

Professional supervision

I work under regular professional supervision, as required by my ethical framework. Safeguarding concerns may be discussed with my supervisor in confidence, without identifying details where possible.
